Your Personal New Years Guide to Florianópolis, Brasil

Step up that gym regimen, dust off the Portuguese study guides and start whipping your liver into game-day shape – Reveillon, the Brasilian 10-day celebration of the New Year, is almost upon us.  Those who already know how this goes down wouldn’t dream of spending the 31st anywhere else.  Sure, you can do warm-ups in Trancoso (in the state of Bahia) and Praia do Rosa (Santa Catarina), but the wonderful island of Florianópolis (aka Floripa), just off Brasil’s southern coast really knows how to bring in the New Year correctly

Jurere International, towards the north of the island is the center of a party scene which has become the best in Brazil (and arguably the world) during that week.  The crowd is dominated by Paulistas with lots of disposable income and a penchant for champagne and models, with a good number of locals and Brazilians from the other southern states as well as a smattering of Americans and Europeans, who have discovered Floripa over the past couple of years.  As New Year’s vacation can at times be hectic, we here at Oasis have taken it upon ourselves to breakdown Reveillon for you, tip by tip, party by party.  May the party gods bless you!

Quick Tips:

– Rent a car.  Things in Floripa are spread out.

- NYE in Floripa is not just a one night party, it’s the entire 10-day Reveillon experience, running from December 26 through January 5.

- If you plan to hit the sunset parties that go down every day at the 4 beach clubs in Jurere International (P12, El Divino, Taiko and Cafe de la Musique), base yourself nearby, otherwise you will spend a lot of time in the car.

- Floripa is not cheap, so be mentally prepared as to avoid sticker shock.  Particularly in Jurere International, which is basically the Brazilian St. Tropez during this time of year.

- Make sure to buy tickets to both sunset parties and nightclubs early.  Tickets to the best parties typically start at $150R the day before and move up literally every hour, getting to $200-300R by the start of the party at 4PM and topping out at as much as $400-500R by the time doors shut at 7 or 8pm (the parties go until around 11PM).

- All of the clubs post event schedules on their websites.

- While Jurere is a party center, by no means is this Carnaval in Rio.  The streets are quiet, the crowd upscale, and chill beaches such as Praia Brava and Praia Forte are close by.

- If you are looking for a more sports-oriented Reveillon experience, Praia Mole is the best place to stay, as it has an amazing beach with surfing and other activities on offer, and is close to Lagoa de Conceicao, a charming town with cafes, restaurants and bars.

Where to go for sunset parties:

Cafe de la Musique – Our recommendation for the best daily party.

P12 – While not the best daily sunset party like Cafe de la Musique, this member of the El Divino family has some great events.

Where to go post sunset parties:

Posh – The consistent favorite for night time debauchery.

Pacha – You’ve probably heard of this international club brand that scores some of the top electronic DJs in the biz.

El Divino Centro – Can be good depending on the event.  Be sure to check their schedule beforehand.

Confraria das Artes – Similar to El Divino Centro in terms of great specific events but not consistent awesomeness.

Where to go on New Year’s Eve:

Café de la Musique – Definitely the best.  If you want to be surrounded by Sao Paulo playboys, Brazilian models, and international jetsetters, this is the spot for you.  Tickets are $1650R for guys and $450R for girls.
