Why I’ll Serve Fernet and Coke at My Wedding in The States
Fernet and Coke, Coke and Fernet, a marriage in and of itself. The most popular drink in the country I have called home for the past four years.
This herbal liqueur and digestive, brought to Argentina by Familia Branca in the early 19th century, took off in popularity when people realized that they wouldn’t get a bad hangover if they drank Fernet at the end of their night.
Pairing Coca-Cola is important in balancing the bitterness of the secret blend of herbs that make up the Branca Fernet recipe, and thus a marriage was consummated.
While I personally don’t choose to drink Fernet, my fiancé, another Estadounidense who has been living here longer than I have, loves it with a passion and has requested two things for our wedding, 1: that we can have an open bar and 2: that Fernet will be present, surely to be guzzled with lots of Coca-Cola. Fernet and Coke is the best….although once you have allowed your tastebuds to adjust to the bite, you have to move on to the next step….fernet on the rocks.
