Top Reasons to Add Uruguay to Your Itinerary

Uruguay is a noticeably popular destination for a large, positively eclectic, selection of people. Not only can one living in Buenos Aires renew their three month travel permit with a quick hop over but it is also an up-market, sun filled and somewhat diverse holiday destination.

Starting with the glamorous Punta del Este filled with tax evaders, passionate yachters and many a gambling man and continuing along the beautiful coast there are many stops to be made whether you are looking for a relaxing family holiday on the beach, a weekend in the Uruguayan countryside or a break on a horse and gaucho filled estancia, for those in Buenos Aires, Abu Dhabi or Shanghai, Uruguay has it all.

A small yet far from insignificant country, in fact the second smallest country in South America – being only a little bigger than Suriname – with a population of just under three and a half million inhabitants. Once known as a country like one giant Estancia, with Montevideo being the nucleus (as it still is today), Uruguay is certainly not short of ranches, meaning that for those who want some kind of physical activities included in their holiday getaway, a combination of sun, sand, saltwater, city going, riding and mate drinking is easily doable.

Montevideo´s Carrasco International Airport, completed only last year after an estimated 134 million dollars were spent, is one of the most impressive architectural spectacles to be seen. With a curved roof, a public landscaped terrace on the second floor and a fully glazed floor which passengers are guided along upon arrival makes ones arrival or departure a true phenomenon.

With a high life expectancy rate of 76.4 years and ranked second in South America on the Global Peace Index and named the country with the best quality of life in South America, it is fair to say that Uruguay has a lot to offer.
