Top 5 Photography Tips: Buenos Aires

As anyone who’s spent a bit of time in Buenos Aires will know, it’s a fantastic city, bursting with life, culture, humor and great places to eat, drink and people watch. However, it can also be a daunting city to tackle and really get under its skin. Our friends over at Foto Ruta, a new photography tour initiative, have solved this problem, using photography as a way of exploring the city, noticing things you wouldn’t normally and taking original photos that deviate from the usual postcard shots.

Whether you’re a budding photographer living abroad or a tourist looking to capture something to inspire your friends back home, Foto Ruta has been kind enough to throw us their top 5 tips for taking photos around Buenos Aires that will stand out from the norm….

1. Deviate from well-trodden routes – The most photogenic parts of Buenos Aires are often found down side streets and lesser explored barrios like Villa Crespo and Abasto, where you’ll find great street art, traditional cantinas, beautifully dilapidated buildings and much more.

2. Don’t think about the camera in your hand think about the environment around you – How can bring things together to make a great picture? That piece of graffiti on the wall, shadows, passersby; anything and everything can come together to create something different.
3. Try different perspectives – Don’t be lazy and take a picture from where you’re already sitting, enjoying an empanada and a beer. Get up and move around. Different perspectives can make all the difference.
4. Don’t take pictures you think people want to see, take the pictures you want to take – Half of the challenge in good photography is about getting out of the rut of recreating pictures that have already been taken.
5. Take lots of pictures! – The beauty of digital photography is that you can afford to take lots of photos and delete the ones you don’t like. If you see a potentially great shot, capture it a few times, one of the shots is likely to come out better than the other (and no, its not cheating!).
