Need to escape from Rio? Well, probably not, but just a few hours away by (bus and boat) some 150km southwest of Rio, the gorgeous island of Ilha Grande awaits you. Upon stepping off the aproximately one-hour boat ride from Angra Do Reis, the main launch point for arriving to Ilha Grande, you enter the island’s commercial center, filled with several beach shops and restaurants perfect for hydrating yourself with a ice cold caipirinha or açaí. Acommodations on the island mainly consist of cheap hotels and hostels but who wants to be inside with all the beauty surrounding you to explore?

Excursions
The island’s most famous beach and deservingly so. A two-hour hike or thirty minute boat ride from the island’s center, the whitest sand and bluest ocean awaits behind a lush forest giving this beach a very deserted feel.
Somewhat difficult to find, this gorgeous waterfall serves as your reward for braving the elements and surviving the several hour hike to get there. Make sure to ask for clear directions for taking off and let the water refresh you once you arrive.
At 990 meters, the Papagayo Peak is the island’s second tallest, and can be seen from almost anywhere on the island. A two (buff) to four (pizza lover) hour hike is needed to reach the top but the views make it well worth the effort.

In addition to the breathtaking beaches and hikes, there are many activities to do including kayaking, surf lessons, sailing, scuba diving, fishing and more!
Check out more information in English at the island’s official website.
