Show Me Cartagena Colombia

If you’re unfamiliar with Cartagena, there are many references in books, movies, and shows to help you get a feel for it before you go.  Check out Oasis’s two favorites after the jump!

Old School: Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Marquez, the famous Colombian author who spent his childhood in Cartagena never specifically mentions the city  (dubbed a “Caribbean port town”) but it’s fairly easy to figure out. To get an even better look, you’ll be happy to know that his most famous book was also made into a film in 2007 starring the always dashing Benjamin Bratt and Javier Bardem. So whether you read it or watch it, get ready for an interesting narrative that intertwines the city’s “steamy and sleepy streets.”

New(ish) School: Miami Vice Episode Smuggler’s Blues

During this episode of Miami Vice, the main characters, Crockett and Tubbs, are sent to track a local law-enforcer who is killing drug dealers and their families.   Even though it’s unfortunately typical to hear a drug reference alongside a mention of Colombia, this episode was filmed mostly in Cartagena, giving you a look at the beautiful colonial city while you watch Don Johnson be, well, Don Johnson.

You may hear and see a lot about Cartagena and Colombia, but to fully grasp any part of the country, you really need to book a ticket and visit.  Check out Oasis Colombia now to find a Johnson, Bardem, Bratt approved pad for your stay.
