If you haven’t already been captivated, now is the time. Colombian-born music style Cumbia has already made its way across Latin America and the rest of the world. Bored with the same old, Colombian artists have begun to update and retool the genre with a unique twist and have rebranded it as Afro-Pacific music.

For the last few years, this new genre of music has been growing in popularity since its initial rise in Colombia. The style is derived from African descendants of Chocó in the Colombia Pacific, Ecuador and Peru. Just like Cumbia, Afro-Pacific music provides different sounds and styles depending on the area it was created.
The most popular of the sounds is known as Currulao. Two Currulao artists ChocQuibTown and Pernett have received international praise including a Grammy for the former. Before taking a vacation to your Colombia destination of choice, make sure you familiarize yourself with this new and upcoming sound that will surely sweep the world over in the coming years.
