Chinese New Year in Buenos Aires

Although Chinese new year is today, the “Chinos,” as the Argentines call them, will celebrate the year of the rabbit this Sunday, Feb 6th, in BA’s own Chinatown located in the Belgrano area of the city. After the jump get the lowdown on this year’s “rabbit fever.”

The fun will start at noon and go all day until around 8pm. Festivities include the yearly dragon dance through the streets, martial arts performances, live music and even tango demonstrations made up of Argentine and “Asiantine” dancers. The streets will be shut down to automobile traffic and lined with dozens of stands, including calligraphy and origami demonstrations, information on Chinese astrology, Feng Shui, Buddism and best of all, a wide variety of delicious Asian street food.

Once a small celebration enjoyed mostly by the local Asian community, last year saw a record 50,000 people come out to welcome the year of the Tiger so show up early if you even want to think about scoring an egg roll.
