San Andrés
The Lowdown
The archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina, identified by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, is located in the Caribbean, 480 miles (720 km) from the Colombian coast. San Andrés, the most well-known and easily accessible of the islands, offers superb diving, clear, warm water, white sand beaches, and colorful culture. The island has a multi-ethnic history which is reflected in the food, music, and dialects on display today. Providencia, 90 km north of San Andrés, is the next largest island in the archipelago, and many Colombians will tell you it is the prettiest place in the country. It lures snorkelers and divers who come for the extensive coral reefs and clear water.
