So Tango = Argentina, Flamenco = Spain and Salsa = Cuba but what what about Uruguay? Let Oasis introduce you to Candombe. Originally from Africa, Candombe has established itself as a popular genre throughout Uruguay. According to historians, it is the survival of the ancestral heritage of the Bantu people and spread to South America with the slave movement during colonial times. Although it is prominent in Argentina and Brazil as well, it is now mainly found in Uruguay. From the Twentieth Century, Candombe stopped being solely Afro-Uruguayan music, and today has established itself as an important part of Uruguayan cultural identity.
The rhythm of the Candombe consists of three different types drums, also known as tambores – the tambor piano, tambor chico and the tambor repique, which, when put together are known as a Cuerda. When heated up, the Cuerda starts creating a sound that is like no other. The dance that accompanies the music is a complicated choreography which is energetic, involves freely improvised steps and lots of movement. La Melaza is an all-female Candombe band which formed in 2005, and has grown to a total of 78 drummers.

Every Sunday from 7pm the band plays at Montevideo’s Parque Rodó, which is only one hour by car from Punta Del Este, so for a slight change in your vacation rental in Punta del este, why not head to witness a celebration of Uruguay’s African roots. The last Sunday of every month, La Melaza puts some testosterone into the mix and encourages male drummers to join as well. Make sure not to miss out on hearing some of Uruguay’s cultural heritage and exploring Montevideo in the process.
