Brasil has slowly been making a name for itself in the fashion world. From its leggy supermodels (Gisele Bunchen, Alessandra Ambrosio and Raquel Zimmerman to name a few) to its growth as a driver in the retail market (with at least 30 new luxury brands expected to enter Brasil in 2012), Brasil is an international fashion contender. Equally, the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo Fashion Weeks continue to grow stronger and stronger every season. With the Fall/Winter 2012/2013 season just a week away, we take a look at some of this year’s standout designers, some of the highlights from Summer 2012 and an open to the public event that you won’t want to miss should you be in São Paulo.

In its 20th season, the theme for the Fall/Winter 2012/2013 Rio Fashion Week (which runs January 10-14) is “I’m Rio, this is our bossa.” Although several of the previous seasons’ celebrated designers will not be showing this time around (including LeaveTeak, Totem and British Colony) there is a lot of hype being made for Bianca Marques, a stylist who is known for her tailoring, which she does out of her Ipanema showroom. A full list of designers showing at Rio Fashion Week can be found here.

Maria Bonita showcased unusual cut-out pieces in her collection, such as this white jacket and skirt with small circles punched out.

The theme for the Fall/Winter 2012/2013 São Paulo Fashion Week (which takes place January 16-21) is “the creative process.” Some of the notable designers showing include Colcci (Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore attended last year, although we don’t expect to see them there again this season), Alexandre Herchcovitch, and men’s brand Reserva, which is known to throw quite a runway show. A full list of designers showing at São Paulo Fashion Week can be found here.
Creative Universe-Brasil Project 2 “a mosaic of mini-universes that shows a cross-section of creation and of thought and its many influences” will be open to the public after São Paulo Fashion Week ends (January 25 – February 15, free entry). In co-production with the publishing and production cultural Essay Art, Creative Universe-Brasil Project 2 will occupy an area of more than 3 thousand square feet on the ground floor of the building of the Beinnale in Ibirapuera Park.
