Once you are inside the 400 year old colonial walls which surround the old city of Cartagena you’ll know why its being called the hidden jewel of Latin America. One of the best things about the city is the lively, vibrant nightlife, every plaza is buzzing with restaurants, bars and performers which mean there is never a dull evening…If you’re not too worn out by a day under the sun a walk along the old stone walls gives you views of the Caribbean sea on your right and the beautifully restored medieval streets on your left.

Arrive at Café del Mar a bar/restaurant located in the walls themselves where you can enjoy cocktails whilst listening to Brazilian lounge music and classic soul whilst watching the sun sink into the sea. Sunsets in Colombia are renown for being exceptionally beautiful and this is one of the best views around. The food at Café Del Mar isn’t great so its probably better to move on for supper. Head to the restaurant La Vitrola (be sure to book in advance as getting a table isn’t easy); where the lounge, live music, excellent food and 1940s Cuban atmosphere all make for the perfect evening.

It’s a great place to enjoy traditional Colombian cuisine in the comfort of one of the coolest venues in the area. If you want to go local main courses such as ‘Mero al tamarindo’ (a white fish with a sauce made of ‘tamarindo’ a local tropical fruit; accompanied by coconut rice – a Cartagena speciality) are delicious, but if that’s not your thing international dishes are also available.Its not long before the first couple stands up and begins dancing to the live Cuban band, (Pitty Dueñas y su grupo Cuba Swing) which is what really creates the unique atmosphere of the restaurant- who knows after a few drinks you could be the one pushing the table aside to give the Colombian regulars a run for their money!
